Kacířův Kancionál

AR culture · 2019

An augmented reality (AR) application breathing life into a physical book through hidden audiovisual content.

The book open on a wooden floor at the song “Bohové jdou k lidem”, ink blots across the left page — and a panel of burning embers standing in the air above it, played by the app.

Project overview

Technologically fuse the dark mysticism of a printed book with a mobile app, ensuring the AR layer deepens the experience and reacts reliably to specific illustrations without breaking the reading ritual.

Solution

I translated the supplied design into an AR mobile application built with Unity and Vuforia, defining the architecture and interaction mechanics around responsive image tracking. I also prepared the video content and delivered the application for both iOS and Android under the partner’s name.

My role

Technical ownership under a partner-agency umbrella: application architecture, interaction mechanics, Unity/C# programming, video editing, asset optimization, testing and deployment to the App Store and Google Play for iOS and Android.

Team & collaboration

Two-person delivery team: Václav Štrobl as the primary developer and a project manager who arranged the engagement; the client supplied the design and approvals.

Constraints
  • Repeated approval rounds were required because parts of the philosophical and audiovisual content sat close to platform acceptability boundaries during store deployment.
  • Vuforia image recognition had to remain reliable across printed illustrations, changing light conditions and different viewing angles.
A watercolor spread with a hot-air balloon and the title “Snigger”, with the matching Insania track surfacing above the page as a green-tinted video panel.

Selected screens
A splatter-printed page numbered 3 beside its lyrics, with a red-and-blue sky rising off the paper as an augmented panel.
The project site: the book photographed with its red satin ribbon, beside the pitch — 324 hand-folded pages of illustrated Insania lyrics, in a square vinyl-sized format.
Two spreads from the gallery: a snake coiling over “Joe si nepohlídal záda”, and a figure walking away from a red “Tak amen!” speech bubble.
The app chapter: App Store and Google Play badges above a hand holding a phone over the open book, the scanner waiting on the page.
